Price fixing protects you from rising electricity prices.
Do you want to get all the benefits of spot electricity, but are worried about high price spikes in winter? A Spot+ contract works like a regular spot electricity contract, but also offers the possibility to protect yourself from price spikes. You can lock in the electricity price in advance for the months you choose with a price fixing and thus protect yourself from large fluctuations.
Example of price fixing: January 2026
Electricity prices can rise quickly in winter, as happened at the beginning of 2026. Price fixing exists so that you can protect yourself from exactly these kinds of price spikes and bring predictability to your electricity bill.
Here is a real example from one of our customers living in a detached house who fixed the price at 7.82 c/kWh for January 2026. By fixing the electricity price in advance, they saved €116 on their January electricity bill.
- Electricity bill with price fixing: €206
- Electricity bill without price fixing: €322
>> Savings in one month: €116

The purpose of price fixing is to prevent the electricity bill from becoming very expensive when prices rise.
What price fixing is – and what it is not
Price fixing is
- A cost-effective way to protect yourself from rising average spot electricity prices
- A way to buy part of your electricity in advance at a known price
- Insurance for your electricity bill in crisis situations
Price fixing is not
- A fixed-price electricity contract
- A billing price
- A way to “beat” spot prices

Price fixing smooths out price fluctuations
With price fixing, you decide in advance at what price you buy the portion of electricity you choose.
- If prices rise high, the fixing can bring significant savings.
- If prices remain low, you only pay a small extra amount for the peace of mind it provides.
A small extra cost in good times is inexpensive insurance for difficult times.

Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about price fixing.
Yes, you can. You can fix the price for the amount of electricity you choose for one, several, or all upcoming months. Many customers fix winter months in several parts when the price feels suitable.
Yes. You can make price fixings for the same month in several parts on different days and at different prices. This allows you to spread the price risk over time instead of fixing everything at one price.
When making a price fixing, you decide how much to fix. The actual billing is always based on your actual consumption. If you use more or less electricity than you have fixed, the difference is automatically bought or sold at the spot price.
Yes. In the Price Fixing service you can see a detailed billing report where you can review month by month how the price fixings have affected your billing price. Read more here.
No. In a fixed-price contract, all electricity is bought at the same price. In price fixing, only part of the electricity is bought in advance, and the rest is always priced according to the spot price. This means you can still benefit from cheaper hours.
The price fixing prices in Kiinnittämö are based on the market’s current expectations of future spot prices. This means however that expectations for future electricity prices are often lower when current spot prices are low.
Yes. You can follow the price fixing rates without making any fixings. Making price fixings is always voluntary.
Nothing extra.
The price fixing service is included in the Spot+ contract at no additional cost. You pay the same basic fees and margins as with a normal Spot contract. There are also no hidden costs or service fees in price fixings. You only pay the price at which you decide to buy electricity in advance. Following the service and viewing price fixing offers is always free, and making fixings is not mandatory.
You can fix the price for the next month up to three days before the start of the month being fixed. For example, you can still fix February on January 29.

Should I schedule my electricity usage if I make a price fixing?
Despite price fixings, you still benefit just as much from scheduling your electricity consumption to hours with lower spot prices. For example, if you do your laundry during a cheaper hour, you reduce your electricity cost slightly, and your final billing price may even be lower than the fixing price.
If it is possible for you to schedule your consumption, it is still worth doing so.
How does price fixing work in practice?
Decide when and how much you want to fix
You can decide yourself when, how much, and for which period you want to fix the price. The real-time price fixing rate offered to you varies depending on the timing and length of the fixing period. You can make price fixings at any time, but no later than three days before the start of the delivery period.
What are the fixing volumes based on?
Price fixings are always based on a forecast of your future electricity consumption. We create the forecast for you, so you do not need to estimate it yourself.

How your consumption forecast is calculated
We calculate your monthly consumption forecast based on your electricity usage during the previous year. This helps ensure that the fixing corresponds as closely as possible to your actual usage. The forecast is automatically updated based on your consumption history during the contract period.
What does kW mean in price fixings?
Electricity consumption is usually expressed as an amount of energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Electricity consumption can also be expressed as the average power for a month.
Example
| January consumption | |
| In January there are | |
| Average hourly power | |
| Average 15-minute power |
The forecast and price fixings are made based on the average hourly power. The fixings are distributed evenly across every 15-minute interval of the month, and the final price calculation is done with 15-minute accuracy.
When you make a price fixing of 1.34 kW based on average hourly power, it corresponds to the following on a 15-minute level:
In other words, you buy 0.335 kWh of electricity for each 15-minute interval at the agreed price.
What do I need to know before making a price fixing?
- When you make a price fixing, your contract becomes fixed-term until the end of the month for which fixings have been made.
- When making a fixing, you buy a certain amount of power (kW) for each 15-minute interval, not a specific kWh amount at a single price.
- The fixing price is not the billing price.
- Price fixings cannot be cancelled once they have been made.
- You can still fix the next month on the third-to-last day of the previous month.
- Read the instructions and fixing terms before making price fixings.
What happens if my consumption does not match the fixing?
You pay the agreed price for the fixed portion.
Electricity for the fixed portion has been purchased in advance at a certain price. This price affects your billing for each 15-minute interval compared to the spot price.
The rest is billed according to the spot price.
Actual consumption almost never matches the fixed average power exactly. Therefore, situations arise where electricity:
- is bought additionally at the spot price
- is sold back at the spot price
When does selling back result in a cost and when in a credit?
For each 15-minute interval, the following are compared:
- the price of the electricity bought in advance
- the spot price for that specific 15-minute interval
If the fixing price is lower than the spot price >> The difference is credited to you
If the fixing price is higher than the spot price >> The difference is charged to you
In the example, 3 kW has been fixed for each 15-minute interval at a price of 10 c/kWh.

How is the billing price calculated?
- Prices are calculated for each 15-minute interval.
- The calculation is done monthly once the metering data has been received.
- The detailed calculation is reported in the Price Fixing service.

On your electricity bill, you will see the price without fixings as well as the “result of the fixing” if any price fixings have been made.
What will I see on my electricity bill?
On your electricity bill, you will see both the price without fixings and the “result of the fixing” if any price fixings have been made.

The amount of the fixing result is the fixed average power for the month multiplied by the number of hours in the month, for example 1 kW × 744 h = 744 kWh.
The price is the difference between the monthly fixing price and the Finnish average spot price for that month
