Wind power

Wind power is Herrfors’ largest form of electricity production. It is renewable, emission-free, and reliable energy, produced in the winds of Ostrobothnia.

Wind power – renewable and emission-free energy

Wind power is one of the fastest growing forms of energy production in Finland and worldwide. In Finland, the expansion of wind power began much later than in many other European countries. At the end of 2024, there were a total of 1,825 wind turbines in Finland, with a combined capacity of 8,358 MW.

Clean Energy

Wind power produces no carbon dioxide emissions or other air pollutants. Wind is an inexhaustible and renewable natural resource.

Low Environmental Footprint

The lifecycle emissions of wind power are very low – throughout the entire lifespan of a turbine, only a fraction of the emissions compared to fossil fuels is generated.

Local Production

Herrfors’ wind farms are mainly located in Northern Ostrobothnia and Ostrobothnia.

How Wind Power Works

Herrfors is one of the pioneers of industrial wind power in Finland. Already in the early 2000s, we were co-owners of the first industrial wind farms, and since then we have been actively involved in the development of wind power in Finland. Herrfors also wants to continue developing emission-free forms of electricity production in the future, and we are advancing wind power projects through Katternö Kraft in the wind power company Puhuri.

INVESTment

Herrfors’ Investments in Wind Power

In recent years, Herrfors has made significant investments in wind power. Wind power is now our most important form of electricity production – and it continues to grow with new projects. We are involved both as owners and shareholders in several wind farms in Ostrobothnia.

Benefits and Challenges of Wind Power

Wind power is an important part of Herrfors’ responsible electricity production – but like all forms of energy production, wind power comes with both advantages and challenges. Below are the key considerations.

Benefits of Wind Power

  • Cost-effective way to produce electricity
Land-based wind power is the cheapest way to produce electricity in Finland.
  • Renewable and emission-free energy
Wind power generates renewable and emission-free energy.
  • Reduces carbon dioxide emissions
Expanding wind power reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Strengthens energy self-sufficiency
Domestic wind power increases Finland’s energy security and reduces the need for imported energy.
  • Supports municipal economy
Wind power has a positive impact on municipal finances and vitality through property taxes and lease income.
  • Drives major investments across Finland
The development of wind power brings significant investments that are distributed across multiple regions in Finland.

Challenges of Wind Power

  • Weather-dependent production method
Wind power depends on weather conditions, and energy cannot be stored indefinitely in large quantities.
  • Negative environmental impacts
Wind power also has some negative environmental effects.
  • Requires a lot of land
As wind turbines have grown larger, increasingly large areas of land are needed to build multiple wind farms.
  • May disturb the environment
Turbines generate noise that can disturb the local environment, and some people feel that turbines spoil the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can find answers to the most common questions about wind power.

How does wind power work?

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity. When the wind turns the rotor blades, they drive a generator that produces electricity.

Does wind power generate electricity on calm days?

No. Electricity production depends on the wind. During calm periods, wind power is supplemented by other forms of production, such as hydropower or nuclear power, to ensure a steady supply of electricity.

Is wind power renewable energy?

Yes. Wind is a renewable and inexhaustible natural resource, and wind power is emission-free during operation.

How much of Herrfors’ electricity comes from wind power?

In 2024, wind power accounted for 42.7% of Herrfors’ total electricity production.
