Jari Rasmus, Operations manager
You can spot the Ylivieska district heating plant from afar. Its tall chimneys and rising steam are a magical sight on a crisp winter morning. It’s been nearly ten years since Jari Rasmus first walked through the doors of Herrfors’ power plant. Today, nearly a decade later, behind that same door works a highly experienced Operations Manager, expertly overseeing the facility’s operation and upkeep.
Jari Rasmus is a vital member of the district heating team in Ylivieska. With a background in electrical power engineering, he has worked across Finland’s energy sector—from Haapavesi, Kuopio, and Kokkola, before landing in Ylivieska. With almost 15 years of experience in district heating, Jari’s knowledge is deep enough to teach others.
Driven by a desire to keep learning, Jari has also pursued additional qualifications alongside his work, including a vocational qualification as a power plant operator. Soon, he’ll complete a specialist qualification as a power plant master, granting him the steam engineer license needed to supervise pressure equipment at plants like Ylivieska’s.
“For me, completing these programs has been a major and meaningful accomplishment.”
Herrfors has supported and enabled his studies alongside work.
As Operations Manager, Jari is responsible for the plant’s daily operations, maintenance, and ensuring the economic and safe running of the facility. His role includes preparing mandatory inspections and maintenance schedules.
The Ylivieska power plant not only delivers district heating to 680 properties, but also produces electricity and process steam to meet customer needs.
“Water chemistry, electricity, automation, mechanical maintenance, fuel logistics—you need to be a multi-skilled expert. It’s not enough to know a little about everything—you really need to know a lot about everything.”
In addition to his daily role, Jari is part of the on-call team, ready to respond in person if needed, based on alerts from remote monitoring. The district heating crew is tight-knit and highly adaptable, sharing tasks flexibly depending on the situation.
