What affects the spot electricity price?

Spot electricity is based on Nordic power exchange prices, which vary with supply and demand. The market sets a separate price for each time period, and it can fluctuate significantly across the day and by season. This means opportunities to benefit from low prices – but also a risk of price increases.

Drivers include weather conditions, hydrological balance, fuel prices, wind and solar output, and overall consumption in the Nordic market area. Interconnectors to neighbouring countries and geopolitical situations also matter, as they can limit imports or push up energy prices across Europe. Typically, electricity is cheapest during windy periods, at night, on weekends and when demand is lower.

How is the billed price formed?

Your electricity sales price consists of the spot prices, the supplier’s margin, a fixed basic fee and VAT. A spot contract lets you influence your bill by shifting consumption to favourable times. For example, start EV charging, your water heater or the washing machine when electricity is cheapest. This saves money while generation-related emissions are at their lowest.

If you value control and accept price variation, a spot contract can be a smart choice. If you want to reduce the risk of rising prices, check our Spot+ contract, which lets you make fixed-term price locks as needed.

Frequently asked questions about spot prices

What does a spot-priced electricity contract mean?

A spot contract is based on the power exchange’s hourly price (Nord Pool). You pay according to the price for each hour. The price can vary significantly across the day and by season.

How is the spot price determined?

The electricity price is set directly according to Nord Pool’s Finnish price area, hour by hour. The total includes the supplier’s margin, VAT and a basic fee. You can see exact prices on your invoice and in our online service or mobile app.

How can I monitor hourly prices?

You can track electricity prices on our website and in the Herrfors app. Prices are published the previous day at around 14:00.

Can I influence the size of my electricity bill?

Yes. A spot contract suits customers who can shift their consumption. By moving, for example, laundry, EV charging or heat-pump use to cheaper times, you can save significantly on your bill.

What risks are associated with the spot price?

Because the price follows market conditions, it can rise quickly—for example in cold weather or exceptional situations. Spot pricing isn’t for everyone; it suits those who tolerate price fluctuations or can shift their use. You can reduce risk considerably by making price locks.

Does the contract include renewable energy?

Electricity isn’t automatically renewable, but you can choose it as an add-on service. Renewable energy reduces your carbon footprint and supports cleaner generation.

Can I switch from a spot contract to another product?

Yes. You can switch, as spot contracts are usually valid until further notice. Note that some products may have a waiting period: if you switch away, you can’t return immediately.

How do I start using e-invoice?

Activate e-invoicing in your online bank by selecting Oy Herrfors Ab as the biller and entering the required details. After that, invoices arrive electronically for approval directly in your online bank.

What happens when I move?

If you move, your spot contract doesn’t transfer automatically to your new address. You can end your contract in our online service and sign a new one at the same time. You can also contact customer service before moving so we ensure electricity supply in your new home.
