Rani Plast

“We use Herrfors’ expert services because understanding the electricity market isn’t always easy.”

Jari Palosaari, CEO, Rani Plast

Rani Plast is one of the top plastic film producers in the Nordic region, employing 350 people in Teerijärvi, Finland, not to mention numerous subsidiaries elsewhere in Finland and abroad. Though large in size, the family-owned company operates with agility and efficiency. Rani Plast sources electricity for all six of its Finnish factories from Herrfors, making energy cost planning a critical component of its budgeting process—supported by Herrfors’ expert advisory services.

Rani Plast manufactures a wide variety of plastic films for both domestic and international clients. Its main product groups include films used in silage production and industrial packaging across multiple sectors. The company is defined by a strong family spirit, reflected in its flexible, customer-oriented operations and swift decision-making—traits that help the company meet changing customer needs with ease.

Rani Plast is among those industrial customers for whom electricity cost planning is of utmost importance. The plastic film production process not only demands large volumes of electricity but also requires an extremely stable power supply. Thanks to close collaboration and effective planning with Herrfors, both energy procurement and delivery have been optimized—helping Rani Plast reduce electricity costs while ensuring uninterrupted production.

“Our factories are heavily reliant on electricity. If production shuts down unexpectedly, it can cause equipment damage and increase maintenance costs,”
Jari Palosaari, CEO

Through joint development projects with Herrfors Verkon, electricity supply has been secured to such an extent that the factory has experienced no power outages over the past year.

“We collaborate with Herrfors almost daily, and the partnership works extremely well,”
Ulf Sandvik, Technical Manager

With annual electricity consumption around 63 GWh, the cost of electricity is a significant part of the company’s cost structure. After raw materials and labor, energy is the third-largest expense. As such, strategic energy planning is crucial. Rani Plast secures part of its electricity at fixed prices in advance, some purchases for 2019 were made already in 2016 while the rest is bought at spot market prices.

“Herrfors continuously provides us with insights into electricity market trends. We use their expert services because the electricity market can be difficult to navigate. We monitor prices daily and sometimes wish we had a crystal ball,”
Jari Palosaari

Rani Plast is a growing organization that’s always looking ahead. Sustainability and circular economy demands are reshaping the plastics industry. The company is exploring its own renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power. One of its factories already runs entirely on wind energy.

“Strong performance and future planning are key to us. We value the practical advice Herrfors gives us on how to improve our operations,”
