The origin of our electricity
Where does the electricity come from?
The electricity that we at Herrfors sell is purchased from the Nord Pool electricity market and resold to our customers around the country. An illustration of our value chain can be found on our sustainability pages.

What is the origin of the electricity in my contract?
I have a contract for renewable electricity
If you have a renewable electricity contract, the carbon dioxide emissions from your electricity sources are 0 g CO2/MWh.
Renewable energy sources: Wind, Water, Sun or Biomass.
Your electricity is certified with guarantees of origin.
I do not have a contract for renewable electricity
If you don’t have a renewable electricity contract, the energy sources and emissions are based on Finland’s residual mix published by the Energy Authority.

Can I buy 100% renewable electricity from Herrfors?
Herrfors offers 100% renewable electricity to both companies and private customers. Electricity suppliers who sell renewable electricity must certify the origin of the electricity. These certificates are called Guarantees of Origin for electricity. In Finland, the register for Guarantees of Origin is managed by the company Finextra Oy, which is owned by the transmission system operator Fingrid. The certification is governed by the Act on Guarantees of Origin for Energy.
Guarantees of Origin have a market price, and to cover the additional cost we charge an extra fee from customers who want a guarantee that their electricity is 100% renewable.
What is the origin of the total electricity sold by Herrfors?
All electricity suppliers must annually calculate the distribution of energy sources and emissions from the electricity they have sold each year.
The electricity sold by Oy Herrfors Ab in 2023 can be divided as follows:
36 %
Renewable energy sources
47%
Fossil energy sources
17%
Nuclear power
In 2023, the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity sold were 322.48 grams per kilowatt hour (g/kWh).
During the production of the sold electricity, 0.29 mg of nuclear fuel was consumed per kWh.
This calculation is based on the residual mix for 2023 published by the Energy Authority.
Even the electricity produced by Herrfors is sold on the Nord Pool electricity market.
