Our energy production methods

Herrfors’ electricity production consists of several energy sources – wind power, hydropower, thermal power and nuclear power – each playing its own role in our electricity generation. We produce electricity both in our own and partly owned power plants, responsibly and transparently.

Herrfors’ electricity production methods and energy mix

Herrfors’ electricity production is a diverse combination of several different energy sources. The majority of the electricity is produced using renewable methods. Herrfors’ production methods support climate goals and provide our customers with transparent, responsible, and locally produced electricity.

Sustainable and Transparent Electricity Production

Herrfors is committed to renewable energy and climate-responsible electricity generation. Our goal is to reduce the use of fossil fuels in electricity production to below 5% by the end of 2025. We make extensive use of renewable energy sources such as wind and water, and we are continuously developing our production towards even cleaner solutions.

Investments in Renewable Energy

We are building new wind farms and maintaining our own hydropower plants. We are also piloting the use of solar energy as part of our production.

Lower Emissions

The share of fossil fuels in our electricity production is decreasing. Our goal is to achieve nearly emission-free production by 2025.

Local and Transparent

Electricity is produced mainly in local power plants, and we communicate openly about where and how our electricity is generated. As our customer, you can, if you wish, follow the origin of our electricity production.

100% Renewable and Emission-Free

Wind power

Wind power is Herrfors’ most important form of electricity generation, and its role has grown rapidly. The kinetic energy of the wind is converted into electricity using large wind turbines. Herrfors owns several wind farms in the Ostrobothnia and Northern Ostrobothnia regions, where the excellent coastal wind conditions are fully utilized.

In 2024, wind power accounted for 42.7% of Herrfors’ total electricity production. Wind power is completely renewable and emission-free energy, making it a key part of Herrfors’ transition towards low-emission electricity production.

A Traditional and Efficient Method

Hydropower

Hydropower is a traditional and efficient way to produce renewable electricity. Flowing water drives turbines that convert kinetic energy into electricity. Herrfors owns several hydropower plants along the Ähtävänjoki River, as well as several partially owned hydropower plants across Finland. Their production accounts for about 12.3% of Herrfors’ total electricity generation.

The key advantage of hydropower is its flexibility—it can quickly respond to fluctuations in electricity demand. Hydropower also supports the variable production of wind and solar energy by serving as a stable balancing power source.

Producing Both Electricity and Heat

Thermal power

Thermal power remains a significant part of Herrfors’ production portfolio. Electricity is generated by burning wood, biofuels, peat, and sometimes waste. Herrfors mainly uses thermal power in combined heat and power production (CHP), which produces both electricity and heat to meet local needs.

In 2024, thermal power accounted for 33.3% of Herrfors’ total electricity production. Although some of the fuels used are fossil-based, Herrfors is continuously developing thermal power toward lower emissions, replacing peat with renewable alternatives and optimizing processes.

Consistent and Reliable Electricity Generation

Nuclear Power

Nuclear power brings stability and zero emissions to Herrfors’ electricity production. Herrfors is a shareholder in a Finnish nuclear power company, which gives access to nuclear energy that produces no carbon dioxide emissions during the production phase.

In 2024, nuclear power accounted for 11.7% of Herrfors’ total electricity production. Nuclear energy serves as baseload power—it generates electricity consistently around the clock and complements weather-dependent production methods such as wind and hydropower.
