District Heating Production Methods
District heating is produced where it is used – as close to your home as possible. In Pietarsaari and Ylivieska, heat is generated efficiently in combined heat and power plants, where the focus is on renewable fuels and energy efficiency. These production methods ensure a reliable supply in all weather conditions.
Pietarsaari – Heat from Renewable Raw Materials
District heat in Pietarsaari is mainly produced at the Alholmens Kraft AK2 power plant, which is the world’s largest power plant using biofuels.
- Main fuels: bark, forest chips and milled peat
- AK2 boiler capacity: 550 MWth (CFB technology)
- Backup: AK1 power plant and Herrfors’ own heating plants
Ylivieska – Local Heat and Electricity from One Plant
In Ylivieska, heat is produced at Vieskan Voima, which operates as a combined heat and power (CHP) facility.
- Fuels: forest chips, sawdust, bark and milled peat
- During summer and for peak demand, heat is produced with a separate wood-fuelled boiler and electrical boilers
- On the coldest days and in the event of possible disturbances, oil-fired boilers ensure sufficient heat
Alavieska and Raudaskylä – Warm Energy Close to You
Herrfors also produces district heating in Alavieska and Raudaskylä, focusing on local and reliable heat production. In these areas, heat is produced efficiently and dependably – right where it is needed.
